Sample itineraries

Day 1. Padang – Siberut – Mentawai flower men.

The travel started in Padang city on the fast boat to Siberut island. The crossing then takes about 5 hours (depending on fast boat schedule) including 1 hour transit in North Siberut (Sikabaluan) before continue sailing to South Siberut Island (Maileppet harbor). Arrival on Siberut, you will meet and greet by teams local guide then straight way to transit town, break for coffee or tea while teams prepare all stuffs to be taken to the forest. After all, giving access to the upstream to visit our Mentawai hosts. We will do trekking, the time is depending how fast we walk and trek path condition (dinner).

Day 2. Mentawai flower men: loincloths, fishing net, traditional medicines.

Today you learn making loincloths made from tree bark. This is the traditional clothing of the Mentawai Shaman. After we will follow how the women here do fishing net in the riverbank. In meantime there is possibility to visit other families close by. Then finally, another thing: You will learn how to prepare traditional medicine. The shaman tells you about medicinal plants (3x meals).

Day 3. Mentawai flower men – Siberut – Padang City.

After breakfast, you will prepare your own belongings and farewell with Mentawai hosts. Family photos might be a good memories. Return to Siberut transit town, break for coffee or tea before dropping you to the harbor for sailing back to Padang city.

Day 1. Padang – Siberut – Mentawai flower men.

Day 2-3. Mentawai flower men: loincloths, sago worm, Poison, fishing net, traditional medicines.

On day 2- 3 you learn making loincloths made from tree bark. This is the traditional clothing of the Mentawai Indigenous People. Looking for and eat sago worms! Sago itself considers as a tree of life and is the most important staple food for the Mentawai People, It’s extracted from the sago palm and then you can cook on the bamboo or wrap it up with palm: Nutrition source and Mentawaian delicacy! You will learn how to prepare poison arrow which all the ingredients come from nature. Also you will following down the riverbank to do fishing net: a beautiful technique of catching prawn, small fish, grab, and etc. In meantime there is possibility to visit other families close by. Finally, another thing: You will be get introduced to the traditional medicine. The shaman tells you about medicinal plants (3x meals).

Day 4. Mentawai flower men – Siberut – Padang City.
